Additional lens implant

Short-sightedness, long-sightedness and astigmatism can also be corrected by placing an additional lens in front of your own natural lens. You then see sharply again, without glasses or contact lenses, while your natural lens is left in place.

We insert an additional lens into your eye without touching or removing your own natural lens. That lens sits either in front of the iris, as an iris-fixated type such as the Artisan or Artiflex lens, or behind the iris, as an implantable contact lens such as the Visian ICL. Both options can correct astigmatism as well. The lens is invisible to everyone, including you, and is usually tolerated extremely well.

When are you eligible for an additional lens implant?

  • Vision specifications

An additional lens implant offers a solution for high short-sightedness (-8 to -22 dioptres), long-sightedness (+4 to +12 dioptres) and astigmatism (0.5 to 6.0 dioptres).

A (toric) iris claw lens or (toric) ICL is a safe and effective alternative when laser treatment is not possible. That may be the case if the correction needed is too great, or if your cornea is too thin or too irregular in shape.

  • Age

You are eligible for an additional lens implant as an alternative to glasses or lenses if you are 18 years or older and your prescription has not changed over the past two years.

  • Recent intake examination

The assessment the treatment is based on may be no more than six months old on the day of the procedure.

We’re happy to help!

Your vision, your comfort and your wellbeing are central at Brussels Eye Center. Our experienced team guides you attentively and takes the time to answer all your questions.

Take the first step towards life without glasses today: book your full pre-operative assessment and introductory consultation (around two hours), so we can choose the solution that suits you best together.

  • After your intake exam, the lenses will be custom-made for your eyes. When your eyes have a cylindrical divergence, we will opt for a toric lens.
  • In the days before the procedure, you prepare at home with eye drops on a set schedule.
  • On arrival, we deal with the paperwork first. You then receive drops that widen or narrow the pupil, depending on what the procedure requires. This takes about half an hour, a moment when you can relax.
  • Once your pupils are in the right state, we take you to the operating theatre. There, we carefully anaesthetise and disinfect your eyes.
  • While you lie relaxed, we insert the artificial lens through a small incision that requires no suture at the end of the surgery.
  • The treatment takes ten minutes per eye and is not painful.

What the implant of an additional lens costs depends on several personal factors and so varies from patient to patient. That is why we draw up a tailored price calculation for everyone. You will find a general overview on our pricing page.
