Laser treatments
Short-sightedness, long-sightedness and astigmatism can often be corrected well with laser treatment. Brussels Eye Center has a range of laser techniques at its disposal, from PRK and TransPRK to LASIK, FemtoLASIK and SMILE.
The techniques are alike in many ways: the treatment usually takes no more than ten minutes per eye and is painless.
The pre-operative assessment shows which technique best suits your eyes.
When are you eligible for a laser treatment?
- Vision specifications
Laser treatment is possible for short-sightedness from -1 to a maximum of -8 dioptres, long-sightedness from +1 to +6 dioptres and astigmatism with a cylinder of up to 6 dioptres.
- Age
You are at least 18 and your prescription has remained stable over the past two years: those are the two basic conditions.
- Conditions involving pregnancy and breastfeeding
Have you recently given birth or just stopped breastfeeding? Then we start the treatment at least three months later.
- Recent intake examination
The assessment used as the starting point may be no more than six months old at the time of treatment.
Various types of laser treatments
Femto-LASIK
Femto-LASIK uses two lasers. First, the Femto laser creates a wafer-thin flap in the cornea. The Excimer laser then treats a deeper layer to correct your vision, after which we gently put the flap back. Using the same Femto laser technology, we also offer related treatments, such as ultra-thin LASIK and SMILE.
Advantages
- Highly precise
- Very fast healing
- Greater safety
- Better vision quality sooner
- Lower chance of needing a re-treatment
Disadvantages
- Not suitable for a cornea that is too thin or irregular
TPRK
With PRK, we first remove the top cell layer of the cornea, by hand (PRK) or with the laser (TPRK), after which the Excimer laser carries out the correction. We then protect the eye with a temporary contact lens while the wound heals; the cell layer recovers fully in 2 to 3 days. A related variant is TransPRK, in which the laser removes that top layer in a single step.
Advantages
- A long-proven technique
- A safe technique for a thin cornea
- Suitable for people who play contact sports with a risk of eye injury (such as boxing, judo and so on)
Disadvantages
- Burning, stinging or watering eyes and sensitivity to light during the first few days after the procedure.
- Eye sensitivity or pain for 48 hours
- A longer healing time than Femto-LASIK
We’re happy to help!
Your vision, your comfort and your wellbeing are central at Brussels Eye Center. Our experienced team guides you attentively and takes the time to answer all your questions.
Take the first step towards life without glasses today: book your full pre-operative assessment and introductory consultation (around two hours), so we can choose the solution that suits you best together.
- The laser treatment itself is quick, around ten minutes per eye, and painless.
- From the moment you arrive at Brussels Eye Center, we do everything we can to put you at ease straight away.
- After the administrative formalities, we carry out the final necessary measurements. The surgeon checks your vision once more and calmly answers any last questions.
- We then take you to the operating theatre, where your eye is locally anaesthetised with drops and carefully disinfected.
- With a Femto-LASIK, you first feel light pressure for about forty seconds while the laser creates the flap. The flap is then lifted so the Excimer laser can begin.
- You look at a flickering light while the treatment is under way. The only thing you hear is a crackling sound, which is perfectly normal. The actual lasering takes less than a minute per eye and is completely painless.
- Afterwards, you are given antibiotic drops.
- After the treatment, you can rest for a while. Once our team has checked you over, you may go home. For safety reasons, you are not allowed to drive yourself, so make sure someone accompanies you.
- Between preparation, additional tests, the treatment and follow-up, you spend around two to three hours with us in total. As we take the time to make everything run smoothly, we recommend setting aside half a day.
What laser treatment costs depends on several personal factors and so varies from patient to patient. That is why we draw up a tailored price calculation for everyone. You will find a general overview on our pricing page.
