Lens replacement?

With a lens replacement, we replace your own natural lens with an advanced artificial one. The procedure mainly addresses the loss of flexibility that the lens undergoes over the years. In this way, lens replacement offers an effective solution for age-related changes in your vision and other eye problems.

Over the years, your lens loses suppleness, so both your near and distance vision decline. During a lens replacement, we remove that natural lens and put a high-quality implant lens in its place. As a result, you see sharply again in the distance, at mid-range and up close. The result is lasting: the implant lens has a fixed strength that no longer changes. In only about 15% of cases are glasses still needed, whether for near or distance vision, though in some cases this can be corrected with laser.

Which lens type suits you best depends on your wishes and on your daily life and work. Our doctors work with monofocal lenses (sharp at one distance), with multifocal, trifocal and EDOF lenses (sharp at several distances), and with the monovision technique, in which one eye is set for near vision and the other for distance. After the assessment, we choose the most suitable option together.

When are you eligible for lens replacement?

  • Age

To be eligible for a lens replacement as an alternative to glasses or lenses, you must be at least 45. As your own lens is replaced, there is no requirement for your prescription to be stable.

  • Recent intake examination

At the time of the procedure, your assessment may be no more than six months old.

  • After your intake exam, the lenses will be custom-made for your eyes.
  • On arrival, we deal with the paperwork first. You then receive eye drops that widen your pupils; this takes about half an hour, an ideal moment to unwind for a while.
  • Once your pupils are sufficiently widened, we take you to the operating theatre, where we anaesthetise your eyes with drops and disinfect them carefully.
  • While you lie comfortably, the surgeon makes a small incision in the cornea. We remove your natural lens and place the artificial lens exactly in position in the lens capsule. The incision made at the start of the procedure requires no suture.
  • The treatment takes ten minutes per eye and is completely painless. You may go home straight away, provided someone accompanies you.

The cost of a lens replacement also varies from person to person, depending on a number of individual factors and on the type of implant chosen. That is why we draw up a tailored calculation for every patient. You will find a general price overview on our pricing page.
